We continue examining the IBLP Men’s Manual and Gothard’s claims about why wives “react.” This time, we focus on his interpretation of Genesis 3:16, specifically, his use of a lesser-known theory by scholar Susan Foh. Gothard cites her 1970s article to support the idea that a wife’s “desire” in the verse actually means a desire to control her husband. But who was Susan Foh? And why have so few people heard of her, despite the huge influence her interpretation had on evangelical teachings about marriage? We explore how this forgotten woman’s theory may have been used to bolster Gothard’s male authority model and consider the possibility that her voice was later pushed aside, right after it became useful. Join me as we uncover the strange legacy of a woman whose words helped shape the dynamics of modern Christian marriage.

Umbrella Rebellion is a podcast where we share our experience in the ATI/IBLP and fundamental cults. We are on a journey of healing and exposing the teachings that lead to and justify abuse. It is our hope that those who are experiencing abuse can find support and escape from it.
