Bill Gothard’s teachings placed heavy burdens on families, turning fathers into enforcers of faith, mothers into overworked facilitators, and children into followers of a rigid “family mission.” His character training program demanded intense focus, daily exercises, and unrealistic expectations, adding pressure to already overwhelmed families. Meanwhile, his insistence on a shared family purpose stifled individuality, leaving young people struggling with guilt, confusion, and lost opportunities.
